Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Services

What is AAC?

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is a scope of practice within the field of Speech-Language Pathology, falling under the Assistive Technology umbrella. AAC can be used to “augment” or increase communication as a secondary support, or provide an “alternative” form of communication for students who are non-speaking.

AAC Assessments are provided to determine a student’s current communication abilities across a variety of low-, mid-, and high-tech communication modalities. Based on information about each student’s interests, strengths, and challenges, the AAC Specialist will recommend specific methods, aids, techniques, and/or devices to optimize communication.

What we offer

We provide AAC evaluations on a timeline, assessments with trials, and hourly consultation/coaching for educational team members and families.

AAC Evaluations

AAC evaluations address communication needs in conjunction with the educational team to help determine the most appropriate AAC tools for the student. Evaluations typically include meeting with the team, observing and evaluating the student, and trialing appropriate AAC supports (low,

mid, or high tech). This evaluation includes a written report and team meeting attendance to review assessment findings. Upon request, we facilitate device rentals for trial periods, and help families obtain funding for the purchase of devices.

AAC Consultation

Hourly coaching sessions offer support and training to educational teams and/or families. These sessions can be used to aid in assessing the effectiveness of devices, supporting device implementation, and providing assistance with programming. Coaching sessions are guided by the needs of the student, family, and educational team. Upon request, we can provide training on a variety of AAC tools and topics (i.e., specific device/program training, aided language input, core vocabulary).
